Retail and wholesale

From the delivery bay to the shop floor

Retail and wholesale is Ireland's biggest private-sector employer, and almost every shop, supermarket and cash and carry has pallets to move. The jobs are similar everywhere: unload the delivery, move pallets to the back store, stack stock high, and get it onto the shop floor without blocking an aisle.

Most of that is done by small, quiet electric trucks. EP's lithium-ion pallet trucks and stackers are light, charge from a normal socket, and are simple enough for any member of staff to use.

What retailers deal with

Handling problems in shops and wholesale

Most retail sites don't need a big forklift. They need the right small trucks, kept running.

Delivery bottlenecks

Lorries waiting at the bay cost money and block the yard.

Our answer: Ride-on pallet trucks and compact forklifts that unload quickly.

Tight back stores

Back stores are packed, with narrow aisles and low ceilings.

Our answer: Pedestrian stackers and 3-wheel forklifts that turn in tight spaces.

Customers nearby

Shop floors and cash and carries have customers walking around.

Our answer: Quiet electric trucks with speed limits and safety lights.

Picking lots of small orders

Wholesalers pick case after case for every order.

Our answer: Low-level order pickers and vertical pickers that speed up picking.

Manual pallet trucks

Staff pulling heavy loads by hand get tired and hurt.

Our answer: The EP F4 lithium pallet truck, light and simple, from a standard socket.

No in-house engineers

When a truck breaks, stock stops moving.

Our answer: Planned servicing and breakdown cover from our own engineers.

Why lithium for retail

Small trucks, big difference

Swapping manual pallet trucks for electric ones is one of the quickest wins in a busy store. Staff move more, with less effort and fewer injuries.

Lithium-ion means no battery maintenance at all: plug in at the end of the day or on a break, from a normal socket.

  • Light, quiet and easy to use
  • Charges from a standard socket
  • No battery watering or acid
  • Less strain on staff than manual trucks
  • Fully maintained hire available

Safety and compliance

Safety and inspections for retail

Even a small pallet truck needs looking after, and every forklift needs regular thorough examinations.

Republic of Ireland

Forklifts must have a thorough examination by a competent person at least every 12 months, or every 6 months if used to lift people, under the General Application Regulations 2007 (S.I. 299/2007, Schedule 1). Our engineers carry out and certify these GA1 examinations.

Northern Ireland

LOLER (NI) 1999 sets the same intervals: a thorough examination at least every 12 months, or every 6 months for equipment lifting people. Our Portadown engineers carry out LOLER examinations across all six counties.

People and trucks

Keep trucks and customers apart where you can. EP safety lights and speed limits help where you can't.

Manual handling

Electric pallet trucks cut the pushing and pulling that causes back injuries in stores.

FAQ

Retail and wholesale equipment questions

What's the best pallet truck for a shop?

For most shops, a lithium-ion walk-behind pallet truck like the EP F4. It lifts 1,500 kg, is light enough to use on the shop floor and charges from a normal socket. See the F4.

Do I need a forklift or a stacker for my back store?

If you're stacking pallets up to about 3 m in a small store, a pedestrian stacker like the EP DS3 is usually enough and costs far less than a forklift. Higher racking or yard work needs a forklift or reach truck.

Can you supply equipment for several stores?

Yes. We supply and maintain fleets across multiple sites in Ireland and Northern Ireland, on one contract with one monthly cost if you hire.

Do staff need training to use an electric pallet truck?

Operators must be trained and competent for the equipment they use. We do an operator handover with every delivery. For formal certified training, use an accredited trainer.

Can we hire instead of buying?

Yes. Our contract hire runs from 12 months, at a fixed monthly cost with servicing, repairs and thorough examinations included. We don't do short-term or weekly hire. See contract hire.

Do you do free site surveys?

Yes. We visit your site anywhere in Ireland or Northern Ireland, check aisle widths, door heights, floors, ramps and loads, and recommend the right machines in writing. There is no charge and no obligation.
